Hindi numbers beyond (संख्या) the first few are famously irregular, with each number from one to a hundred largely needing to be memorised individually rather than built from a clean, predictable pattern the way English numbers often are. This irregularity has historical roots in how numbers evolved from Sanskrit and Prakrit over centuries.
But for a learner, the practical result is the same: steady memorisation, ideally in small, manageable chunks, works better than searching for shortcuts. Starting with one to twenty and building outward gradually, rather than attempting the whole sequence at once, keeps the task manageable. Numbers are used constantly, so the effort invested here pays off quickly in daily conversation.
Learners frustrated by the irregularity of Hindi numbers should take some comfort in knowing that native speakers themselves sometimes hesitate over larger numbers in casual conversation. Steady, unhurried memorisation, a handful of numbers at a time, is a perfectly reasonable pace, and there is no need to rush toward fluency with the full sequence at once.
