ज्ञ: The Conjunct Letter That Confuses Everyone

ज्ञ is one of the more unusual conjunct letters in Devanagari, formed technically from ज and ञ, though its shape looks almost nothing like either letter on its own. It appears in common words like ज्ञान, gyaan, knowledge. Pronunciation of ज्ञ varies by region and speaker, sometimes closer to gya, sometimes closer to gyaan with a slightly different opening sound.
This variation is normal and rarely causes real confusion among fluent Hindi speakers. Learners often find ज्ञ frustrating at first simply because its shape does not obviously reveal its origins.
