ही (hi) and भी (bhi) are small emphatic particles that shift the focus of a Hindi sentence considerably despite their brevity. Hi narrows attention tightly, main hi jaunga, only I will go, while bhi broadens it, main bhi jaunga, I will go too. Placement matters greatly with both particles.
Moving hi or bhi to a different word in the sentence changes exactly what is being emphasised, a subtlety that takes careful listening and practice to fully absorb. Learners should experiment with placing hi and bhi in different positions within the same basic sentence, noticing how the emphasis shifts each time.
This small pair of words rewards patient, attentive practice considerably. A useful drill is taking one short sentence and inserting hi after a different word each time, listening carefully for how the emphasis shifts with each new placement. Doing the same exercise with bhi afterward makes the contrast between the two particles considerably easier to feel rather than simply memorise as an abstract rule.
