जी (ji) is a small word added after a name or a yes or no to signal respect, turning a plain haan, yes, into the more courteous haan ji, or a name into a gently formal form of address. The suffix is flexible, applied to elders.
Teachers, strangers and anyone the speaker wishes to address with a touch of extra courtesy, without needing to reach for a longer, more formal phrase entirely.
