Short and Long: The Difference Between अ and आ

Devanagari distinguishes short and long vowels clearly, and getting this right matters, since the difference can change a word's meaning entirely. अ is short, आ is long, and the same pattern of short paired with long runs through the whole vowel set. In spoken Hindi, holding a long vowel roughly twice as long as a short one is usually enough to be understood correctly.
Written Devanagari marks this difference plainly, unlike English spelling, which often hides vowel length behind irregular letter combinations. Learners should practise short and long vowel pairs side by side, saying words that differ only in length, to train the ear as much as the eye.
This distinction becomes second nature quickly with a little deliberate, repeated practice. A useful pair to practise this distinction with is कम, kam, less, against काम, kaam, work, two genuinely different words that differ only in vowel length, a small but telling example of how much this distinction matters.
