आप कैसे हैं (aap kaise hain) is the polite way to ask how someone is doing, built from aap, the respectful you, and kaise, how. It is one of the very first full sentences most learners of Hindi practise, and rightly so. The reply often mirrors the question rather than offering much detail: main theek hoon, I am fine, is the standard, easy answer.

Hindi conversation, like many languages, treats this exchange as a warm ritual more than a request for a full report. Practising aap kaise hain out loud, with a genuine pause to listen for the answer, is good early habit building. It teaches both the grammar of respectful address and the simple courtesy of asking before moving on to anything else.

A useful variation worth learning alongside this phrase is tum kaise ho, the same question asked in the more casual tum form, appropriate among friends rather than elders or strangers. Knowing both versions lets a learner match their greeting naturally to whoever they happen to be speaking with.
