Family Words That Give Children Their First Vocabulary
Launch library · evergreen read

Family words are usually the very first vocabulary a Hindi speaking child learns, starting with माँ (maa), mother, and पापा (papa), father, before expanding outward to दादा (dada), grandfather, and दादी (dadi), grandmother. Hindi kinship terms are notably specific, with different words distinguishing a mother's side of the family from a father's side.
A detail that can be introduced gradually as a child grows more confident with basic family vocabulary. Pointing to family members in photos, or naming who is who at a gathering, is a natural, low pressure way to build this vocabulary. Children tend to learn family words with particular ease, since the people themselves are already familiar.
A useful activity is building a simple family tree together, labelling each photo with its correct Hindi kinship term as the child places it. This hands on approach turns an abstract vocabulary list into a concrete, personal map of the people already most important in a child's daily life.
