ङ ञ ण are the quieter nasal consonants of Devanagari, each belonging to a different consonant row and each marking the nasal sound produced at that particular place in the mouth, from the back of the throat to the roof of the mouth. ङ appears mainly in conjunct forms rather than standing alone.
ञ shows up in words like ज्ञान when broken apart, and ण is somewhat more common, appearing in words like गणित, ganit, mathematics, using the retroflex nasal sound. These three letters are not the most frequently used on their own, but recognising them helps a learner make sense of the full logical structure of the Devanagari consonant chart.
