श ष स: Three Letters, Three Kinds of S

श ष स represent three related but distinct s sounds in Devanagari, a distinction that does not exist in standard English at all, where a single letter s covers similar ground. Getting these three sounds right takes patient, careful listening. श (sha) is a soft palatal sound.
ष (Sha) is a harder retroflex sound used mainly in Sanskrit derived words, and स (sa) is the plain, familiar s sound closest to English. In casual speech, the first two often blur together. For most learners, focusing on स as the reliable default and gradually training the ear for श is enough for confident everyday Hindi.
ष can largely wait until more formal or literary reading becomes a priority. A useful comparison pair is साल, saal, year, against शाल, shaal, shawl, two different words separated only by which of the three s sounds is used, a good small exercise for training the ear.
