उ and ऊ: Two Ways to Write a Short and Long U

उ and ऊ are the short and long u sounds in Devanagari, again following the same short and long pairing found throughout the vowel system. Their matras attach below a consonant rather than above or before it. क with the उ matra becomes कु, ku, while क with the ऊ matra becomes कू, koo.
The visual difference between the two matras is small, a short curl versus a slightly longer one, so careful attention is worth developing early. Learners should practise reading and writing these matras slowly at first, since their below the line placement can be easy to miss when scanning text quickly.
Familiarity comes readily with steady, unhurried repetition. A useful comparison pair is सुर, sur, musical note, against सूर, soor, a longer vowel version tied to different vocabulary entirely, a small but useful reminder of how much weight this single matra distinction can carry. Writing both matras several times by hand, slowly and deliberately, helps the fingers as well as the eyes learn the difference.
