य र ल व: The Semi Vowels of Devanagari

य र ल व are often grouped together as the semi vowels of Devanagari, consonants that behave a little like vowels in how smoothly they blend into surrounding sounds. They appear constantly in everyday Hindi vocabulary. य (ya), र (ra), ल (la) and व (va) each have distinct.
Clear pronunciations, but as a group they share a certain softness compared to the harder stop consonants like क or ट discussed elsewhere in this series. These four letters are well worth learning early, since they turn up in extremely common words: yaar, friend, roughly using र; lekin, but, using ल; and vaha, there, using व.
Recognising them quickly speeds up reading considerably. These four letters also appear constantly in words borrowed from Sanskrit into everyday Hindi, since the sounds themselves have remained remarkably stable across many centuries of the language's gradual, ongoing change. Listening closely to how these consonants soften surrounding vowels in fast, natural speech is a genuinely useful next step once the letters themselves feel familiar.
