Ghar: The Word That Means Home

घर (ghar) means house, but Hindi speakers rarely use it for bricks alone. A ghar is where the door stays open for family, where slippers wait by the entrance, where the kitchen smell tells you what evening it is. The English word house rarely carries all of that.
Ask someone in Hindi where their ghar is, and they may answer with a place their family left generations ago, not the street they currently live on. The word stretches across time as easily as it stretches across a room, holding both memory and address at once. For a learner, ghar is a useful anchor word. It appears in greetings, in directions, in stories told before sleep.
Once you can say ghar with warmth rather than just accuracy, a great deal of everyday Hindi starts to open up around it. A simple way to fix ghar in memory is to notice how often it appears paired with chalna, to go, in the phrase ghar chalna, heading home. Hearing that pairing repeatedly in conversation, at the end of a visit or a long day, helps the word settle into memory far faster than studying it alone ever would.
