खुशी (khushi) is happiness, but said with a lightness that the English word sometimes lacks. It shows up in greetings, aap se milkar khushi hui, I am happy to meet you, and in wishes for festivals and new beginnings, when people hope khushi will fill a home.

What is pleasant about khushi is how physical it sounds. Say it slowly and you can feel the word open at the start and settle at the end, almost like a small breath released. Hindi speakers use it often, not saving it for rare or dramatic occasions. For learners, khushi is a gentle word to practise expression with. Try pairing it with simple sentences: bahut khushi hui, I felt great happiness.

Small, sincere uses like this build both vocabulary and the emotional range that makes spoken Hindi feel natural. A gentle way to practise khushi further is pairing it with a cause: is khabar se khushi hui, this news brought happiness. Building small, specific sentences like this, rather than repeating the bare word alone, helps a learner move from simply knowing khushi to genuinely being able to express it in real conversation.
