Maa: The First Word and the Last

माँ (maa) is mother, and it is often the very first word a Hindi speaking child learns to say. Short, soft and easy for small mouths, it needs no formal grammar around it. Maa alone, called across a room, is a complete and urgent sentence in itself.
The word carries respect as naturally as affection. Even adults who have long left home still say maa with the same softness they used as children, and the word rarely loses that quality no matter how old the speaker becomes. For learners, maa is worth saying slowly and often, not just for vocabulary but for pronunciation.
Its long nasalised vowel is a useful early lesson in how Hindi sounds carry meaning through tone as much as through the letters themselves. Hindi also distinguishes a mother by marriage or a stepmother with separate, specific terms, part of the same detailed kinship vocabulary discussed elsewhere in this series. Maa itself, though, stays reserved almost universally for one's own mother, a word too intimate to be casually extended to anyone else.
