Namaskar: A Slightly More Formal Hello

नमस्कार (namaskar) is a close cousin of namaste, slightly more formal and often used in written greetings, public speeches or broadcast introductions rather than casual daily conversation between friends. Both words share the same gesture, palms pressed together, and the same underlying respect, but namaskar tends to carry a touch more ceremony.

Choosing between the two is often a matter of setting as much as personal habit. Learners can use namaskar confidently in more formal contexts, such as addressing a group or opening a letter. Knowing both namaste and namaskar gives a learner useful flexibility across different registers of Hindi.

Namaskar is also the more common choice in formal written correspondence, appearing at the start of letters or announcements where namaste might feel slightly too casual for the occasion being addressed. Broadcasters and public speakers reach for namaskar specifically because it reads as neutral and respectful to a wide, unfamiliar audience at once.
